Program Information

Q: What is the summer reading program?
The library has the summer reading program to encourage and to reward families who make reading a part of their day. Participants earn prizes by reading on their own and being read to by family.

Q: Who can participate?
Children from 0 through 6th grade.

Q: How long does the program last?
Registration starts Monday, June 3 and ends on Saturday, August 3. Entry tickets to Grand Prizes Drawing need to be in by 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 3. Prizes are not be given out until Monday, June 10.

Q: How do I start?
Registration starts on June 3. You can register in person or online. Reading logs are available at the library or online starting June 3.

Q: What can I count as reading?

  • Reading on your own. Books, magazines, graphic novels and comics, and non-fiction count.
  • Reading to a younger sibling.
  • Family members reading to you. Reading aloud a favorite book over and over again counts.
  • Listening to audiobooks.
  • Parents can earn prizes in the Adult Reading Program by reading to their children.

Q: How do I track my reading and earn prizes?
Reading is tracked in increments of 15 minutes or 3 books. Tracking by minutes is recommended for independent readers and by books for kids who being read to or just learning to read. Each level is 4 hours or 48 books. Every level you complete you earn a sticker and the corresponding prize. You can only go through the levels one time.

Q: What are the prizes?

  • Level 1 (4 hours/48 book): One prize pack filled with free passes and coupons (Eugster's Petting Farm, Madison Mallards, Pizza Hut, Cave of the Mounds, and Rocky Rococo’s Pizza)
  • Level 2 (8 hours/96 books): One prize from the Treasure Chest
  • Level 3 (12 hours/144 books): One book AND one entry ticket for the Grand Prizes Drawing
  • Extra Reading: For every extra four (4) hours of reading you can earn another entry ticket for the Grand Prizes Drawing.

Special Events

All programs are: all ages, free, and run about 45 minutes. Programs are sponsored by The Friends of the Oregon Public Library and the South Central Library System. Please check below for times and locations. If you need accommodations to attend library programs, please call (608) 835-3656 two weeks in advance.

OPL 4th Annual Worm Race
June 13, 2:00 pm
Oregon Public Library

Kids team up in pairs and race real night crawlers. The top three teams win trophies. Worms are provided by the library.
Registration is required and starts on Monday, June 3.

David Landau

Prairie View Elementary Little Theater

David Landau presents an educational, upbeat musical program that involves children singing, moving, dancing, laughing and learning.

Black Light Camp
June 27, 10:00 am
Prairie View Elementary Little Theater

A unique, colorful, fast-moving and mysterious show performed in the purple glow of UV lights. Featured are neon live characters, puppets, visual and sound effects, and music that tickles the funny bone.

Crafty Kids: Underground Wonders
July 11, 2:00-4:00 pm
Oregon Public Library

Drop-in during the two hour session to make some awesome projects.

Ice Cream Reading Challenge
July 18, 2:00 pm
Oregon Public Library

Come to the library and read or be read to for 30 minutes. There will be a storytime for those who are not yet reading. As a reward, children will get an ice cream sundae. Ice cream served at 2:45 pm.

Storyteller Chris Fascione

Netherwood Elementary Big Gym

Chris Fascione acts out the best of children's literature and folk tales in a fun-filled, participatory show using mime, juggling and comedy.

Great Scott and the Magic Archeology Adventure

Don’t miss a fast-paced, high energy magic show that features music, puppets, and plenty of audience participation.
