REFERENCE AND ADULT SERVICES LIBRARIAN
Oregon Public Library is seeking a creative, book-loving, technology-savvy Reference and Adult Services Librarian who is committed to providing outstanding customer service to patrons of all ages.
The Village of Oregon is an established community in Dane County, located 7 miles south of Madison, the state capital. Oregon’s 2007 population estimate was 8,721 and serves an estimated service population of 16,388. The centrally located library is 10,500 square feet. The library enjoys great local support including an active friends group. Circulation in 2007 was 271,934. The library is a member of the LINK automation consortium with 39 other members of the South Central Library System. The ideal candidate will possess a great sense of humor, the ability to cope with constant change, knowledge of technology and commitment to being part of a management team. The position is 40 hour per week. Flexibility in scheduling is essential. The work schedule varies including evenings and rotating weekends.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Adult collection development and budgeting
Readers’ advisory and adult programming
Supervision and continuing education training for staff development
Implementation and maintenance of current technologies
Minimum qualifications: MLS from ALA-accredited institution with 2 years library experience.

Job Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This position directs the activities of the library’s reference and adult services, provides computer expertise in reference related areas of the library such as basic LAN operations, software installation, maintenance, and web page maintenance. Immediate Supervisor: Library Director
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Plans, organizes, promotes, and conducts adult library services and programs.
- Provides reader’s advisory, reference, and other patron assistance services.
- Advises the library director in regard to policies and procedures in area of responsibility; writes reports and recommendations; implements decisions.
- Assists with the hiring of Information Desk staff.
- Trains, supervises, and evaluates Information Desk staff and volunteers.
- Develops monthly Information Desk Schedule.
- Develops subject areas in the library adult materials collection, selects materials for purchase, weeds and maintains the collection.
- Conducts library tours, presents programs to local groups as requested, and performs other outreach activities for library patrons.
- Attends management team meetings and participates in planning and policy discussion.
- Carries out library policies and procedures.
- Serves as a liaison with SCLS Technical Support Specialist and troubleshoots public PCs.
- Maintains adult services portion of library‘s website.
- Coordinates interlibrary loan with technical services and processes interlibrary loan requests
- Serves on professional and library system committees as assigned by the library director.
- Provides backup assistance at the circulation desk as needed.
- Proctors exams.
REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
- Ability to direct the work of the Information Desk staff, library assistants, shelvers, interns, and volunteers.
- Ability to interpret basic descriptive statistical reports.
- Ability to plan, organize and conduct continuing educations program on library services for the reference department and library staff.
- Knowledge and understanding of literature in reference and of basic library principles, procedures, technology, goals and philosophy of service.
- Current applicable knowledge of automated systems, computer applications, databases, 2.0 technologies and search methods.
- Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied/changing work demands and make decisions as required.
- Ability to identify problems and opportunities, review possible alternative courses of action and utilize information and resources for decision-making purposes.
- Ability to communicate effectively with the library director, library users, volunteers, staff, representatives of other libraries, the media, and the general public.
- Knowledge of cataloging, classification, reference work and book selection.
- Ability to prepare a variety of documents including bibliographies, statistical reports, correspondence and public relations announcements using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
- Ability to manage and work with others in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to supervise library operations when the director is not present.
- Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objective.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION:
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, and balance in order to shelve books
- Sitting, standing, walking, climbing and stooping
- Bending/twisting and reaching
- Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches of less
- Lifting and carrying: 50 pounds or more
- Handling: processing, picking up and shelving books
- Fingering: typing, writing, filing, sorting, shelving and processing
- Pushing and pulling: objects weighing 60-80 pounds on wheels
- Mobility: travel to meetings outside the library
EQUIPMENT USED:
- Computer and software programs, printers, calculator, copy machine, fax machine, telephone, microfilm reader, audio-visual equipment, book truck, video cleaner, and disc cleaner.
ENVIRONMENT/WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to work effectively in a library environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evening and weekend hours.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Masters Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited school.
- Two years experience in a public or academic library.
Approval pending by the Oregon Public Library Board of Trustees.
